Medical Technician

Duties include, but may not be limited to:
Draws blood from outpatients for requested laboratory tests; Verifies the patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time to insure proper identification; Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood; Instructs patients and follows proper procedures for redrawing blood; Performs the following special drawing procedures; Collecting timed specimens such as growth hormone, peak and trough drug levels, glucose and lactose tolerance specimens; Assists in teaching laboratory and medical center personnel theoretical and practical aspects of phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen requirements; Receives all requests for testing into the laboratory; Verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request; Interacts with clinic personnel to correct discrepancies; Recognizes emergency situations and takes necessary actions; Selects, performs, evaluates, and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or automated techniques in accordance with established SPOs; Performs analysis on unknown samples that are introduced as a means of checking performance; Performs other duties as assigned. Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. One (1) year of specialized experience that equips me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position at the GS-6 level. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience includes; experience that may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g. biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-5:
Have 6 months of graduate education with a major study appropriate to the position being filled? This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-5:
Have equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described in one (1) and two (2) above to meet the total experience requirements for the Medical Technician position. Combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
